Ultra Music Festival Weekend One Review & Setlist Roundup

Ultra Music Festival celebrated it’s 15th year over two weekends for the first time, and I was lucky enough to attend Weekend One. Ultra is like the EDM community’s Christmas, there are other fests just as there are other holidays, but everything revolves around Ultra and it is by-and-large recognized as the grandfather of the modern EDM festival. Here’s a recap of my experience this year.

Day 1: Friday, March 15th
After waiting in a long line, we got in at around 7 on Friday and saw a bit of Nicky Romero on the Main Stage right as we walked in. He played tracks like “Pandor,” “Sparks” and Tommy Trash‘s “Toulouse” remix while we were there. In the middle of his set, we headed over to the Megastructure to see house legends John Digweed & Carl Cox.

Mat Zo, Porter Robinson – Easy (Original Mix)

Can not believe we have not posted this track yet, especially when its a collaboration between two great artists like Mat Zo and Porter Robinson. I had the opportunity to see Mat Zo play at the beginning my winter break and this was definitely the song that stayed stuck in my head after the show was over. It was not a huge suprise that he would play it due to the amount of rips and previews we’ve heard of “Easy,” but to hear the full track blend so well into a live set was nothing short of amazing. It has both high-energy build ups to allow you to dance to it but doesn’t feel overpowered leaving you at ease when it is over with. I do not think a track could sum up a year of EDM so perfectly.

Above & Beyond ft. Zoe Johnston – Alchemy (Above & Beyond Club Mix)

Back with a bang to present to you a club mix by my favorite producers, Above & Beyond, of their original track “Alchemy”. The original track is an amazing chill track that was included in their album Group Therapy in 2011. On the vocals is another favorite, Zoe Johnston. Known for her masterful vocals on pieces like “You Got To Go” and “Love Is Not Enough”. The club mix has a much more upbeat vibe with its progression and harder kicks. This is consistent of Above & Beyond’s style when making a club mix of one of their tracks. Be patient as this song is a constant progression to an amazing uplifting piece with one of the best vocalists in the world.

I included a preview of an upcoming Mat Zo and Porter Robinson track played on Above & Beyond’s latest TATW 450, which was an epic event in India that would be any trance fans dream to attend. This record also achieved the award of Record of the Week on such a big a occasion.
