Before we get to the music let’s get the drama out of the way. Now you might have heard about Rusko blowing up at Mad Decent for releasing a stream of his full album on a website, basically allowing it to leak. Diplo has come back saying it was his management who approved the stream, not the label. Not sure who’s fault it is, but there’s a good chance Rusko won’t be with Mad Decent much longer. Anyways..
I couldn’t be more impressed with Rusko‘s new album Songs. My favorite thing the new album is that he stays true to his roots while fantasticly displaying his wide range of influences, you name it: drum & bass, reggae, old school dub, garage and house. In fact, there is a ton of reggae influence on this album; evident in tracks like the incredible “Skanker,” “Love No More,” and “Be Free.” Then there is, of course, “Somebody To Love.” One of my favorite tracks on the album is “Thunder,” he really goes outside of his typical style for this one, it’s a huge tune. You might remember it’s the track that he sampled in his New Years Eve promo video. “Pressure” is a catchy track I absolutely love, it has nice vocals and an old school UK garage sound that I really dig–this tune’s getting tons of spins over here. “Whistle Crew” is just awesome, I don’t know if it’s just me but I can’t shake the feeling I’ve heard it somewhere before. For all you bassheads craving the more typical dubstep bangers, direct your attention at “Dirty Sexy,” “Opium” or “Asda Car Park.” The album is fourteen tracks long, so I’m nine unreal tracks for you to check out.
